Minimum Requirements:
Applicants must meet at least one of the following academic criteria:
- Valid Driver’s Licence
- N2 Qualification including the following subjects:
- Mathematics
- Engineering Science
- Diesel Trade Theory
- One of the following:
- Industrial Electronics
- Engineering / Technical Drawing
- Motor Trade Theory
Alternatively, applicants with a Matric Certificate may also qualify if they passed:
- Mathematics (Not Mathematical Literacy) – Minimum 40%
- Technical Mathematics – Minimum 40%
- Physical Science – Minimum 40%
- Technical Science – Minimum 40%
- Engineering Graphics and Design – Minimum 40%
Candidates who do not yet meet the N2 requirements may be offered support to complete these subjects through AFGRI-sponsored Further Education and Training as part of the programme.
Role Responsibility:
The apprenticeship includes a comprehensive 3-year training programme combining theoretical learning and real-world application. Key responsibilities and expectations include:
- Repair and maintenance of agricultural and earthmoving equipment
- On-the-job training in a multidisciplinary environment
- Stock control responsibilities
- Hands-on mechanical work and diagnostics
- Active customer service support
- Participation in scheduled training rotations and product training
- Attendance at the John Deere Training Facility and internal workshops
- Saturday classes and ongoing distance learning as needed
Training Structure:
- The first 6 months of the programme are probationary
- Following successful probation, apprentices sign a 3-year training contract
- Practical and distance learning conducted concurrently
- Attendance at Practical Training Institutes in required phases
- Product training on John Deere and other supplier machinery
- No training cost to the apprentice if passed; re-exams are self-funded
