_Nobuntu Mkhize Breaks Silence on Viral FlySafair Incident_

Nobuntu “Nobs” Mkhize, the former brand manager at the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), has spoken out about the viral incident that occurred on a FlySafair flight from Durban to Cape Town on December 26th last year.

_The Incident: A Timeline of Events_

Mkhize explained that the altercation began when she requested a lighter wine than the Merlot offered by the flight attendant. Despite her preference, the flight attendant insisted she take the Merlot, leading to further escalation when Mkhize asked to see the menu.

_The Situation Escalates_

The situation intensified when the flight attendant returned with another crew member. Footage from the incident shows Mkhize throwing a can at the flight attendant, followed by a scuffle with the crew and passengers who attempted to restrain her.

_Mkhize’s Account of the Incident_

Mkhize clarified that she was not intoxicated during the altercation, acknowledging that she had consumed one or two drinks in the airport Slow Lounge before boarding, but was not drunk. She described her reaction as an “out-of-body experience,” stating she entered “animal mode” as the situation escalated.

_Consequences and Legal Actions_

Following the incident, Mkhize was dismissed from her position at the SABC. She contended that her termination had occurred without a proper investigation and violated labour laws, announcing plans to challenge the dismissal in court. Mkhize also apologised for her remarks towards people of colour during the incident, stating that she was not raised with such views and expressing regret for any offense caused.

_Reflection and Apology_

Reflecting on the events, Mkhize admitted, “I could have handled it better.” Her apology and acknowledgement of her actions have sparked a mixed reaction from the public, with some accepting her apology and others calling for further accountability.

_The Incident’s Aftermath_

The incident has sparked widespread condemnation, with the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) launching an investigation into alleged racist remarks made during the altercation. Political parties, including the Democratic Alliance (DA) and the Patriotic Alliance, have also taken action, with the DA filing a crimen injuria and assault case against Mkhize, and the Patriotic Alliance lodging a complaint with the SAHRC.
